Fishing and Boating Guide: Captiva Island

Photos, Locations, and Phone Numbers

See our other Activities page!

Fishing and boating are top attractions for Captiva Island, Florida. Of course, all watersports are popular in the excellent weather and beautiful waters of the Gulf of Mexico and Pine Island Sound. You can rent or charter all types of boats from the local marinas, and in many vacation rental homes you don't even need to drive there.

Savvy professional guides can help anglers find lots of biting fish in any season. Hook up with professional charters for the most carefree and successful fishing trip. Reservations strongly suggested, especially in high season. Some visitors book well in advance to be sure of their first choice in guides. At right, commercial fishermen check their traps in the Gulf, which is healthy and teeming with marine life.

Directions and locations of these activities may be obtained from the Captiva Map. Just click the black & white name symbols next to each restaurant name and find that same symbol on the Map. Fishing on the Beach or on the Bay

The quickest way to get down to fishing is to toss in a line from the beach, or from your dock on the bay. Stop by any of the fishing centers listed below for bait, tackle, fishing licenses, and supplies. The experts can offer suggestions on what fish are biting on the Gulf beach side and on the bay side of the island.

Fishing with "help" from Great Blue Heron

Don't be surprised to get some help while fishing on the beach - from a great blue heron. While these huge birds may seem exotic at first, you'll find one your constant companion as soon as you begin to fish. Of course, they may also be tempted to steal the bait from your bucket so keep an eye on them. In this photo, the heron is waiting to see if the fisherman brings up any good bait fish with the net. These nets are handy and effective, and are sold locally in various sizes. This fisherman knows how to enjoy a day at the beach: after casting his baited lines into the surf, he can relax with his family in the sun until there's a bite. Sometimes, you can have a great day whether or not the fish are biting a lot. Beachfront homes make surf casting a very convenient proposition, of course. Bayfront homes with docks are also great for fishing off the dock or taking the boat out. Many docks have lighted fish-cleaning benches with fresh running water - keeping it fun and easy as it can be.
